Artist of the Weekend: Kid Ink

Posted: September 21, 2013 in Hip-Hop/Rap

Brian Collins, better known as Kid Ink, is an up and coming rapper from Los Angeles, California. Kid Ink got his start in the music industry as a beatmaker and produced for multi-platinum artists like Diddy and Sean Kingston. Unknown to many people, he actually got his start in rapping under the name Rockstar and released his first mixtape, World Tour. This grabbed the attention of DJ Ill Will who signed him to his independent label, Tha Alumni Group. After joining Tha Alumni, Rockstar decided to change his stage name to Kid Ink because of his love and obsession with getting inked up (he’s lost count after 22 of them). Thanks to the Internet and social media, Kid Ink has developed a cult-like following of dedicated fans spanning the globe, including a huge following in Germany and France.

In 2010, Kid Ink released his “first” mixtape, Crash Landing, but it was his third mixtape, Wheels Up, that garnered him the most attention and got him featured on the 2012 Freshman XXL list. In the beginning of 2013, Ink announced his signing with major record label, RCA Records and launched his first major single “Bad Ass” with rap heavy hitters, Wale and Meek Mill.

Kid Ink’s first studio album, My Own Lane, is due out within a few months and the first single “Show Me” with Chris Brown was just released. Kid Ink may not be the best lyrically, but his flow is on point and with some of the best beats in the industry, he’s about to strike it big.
